Awards Presented at 5th Annual Research Bridges

Sarnia, ON – Awards have been handed out at the fifth annual Research Bridges - Graduate Symposium at the Western Sarnia-Lambton Research Park.

The event is designed to assist students in their understanding of the connections that strengthen collaborative research between industry and academia. A panel of judges from the community evaluated 12 different presentations which examined future industrial and commercial applications of research projects.

Awards included:

Fluidization & Particle Technology

  • First Place: Joseph Donohue - Scale-up of a Circulating Fluidized-Bed Bioreactor to Treat Municipal Wastewater
  • Second Place: Angel Lanza - Fluid Dynamics in a Down Flow Reactor: Validation of a CPFD Numerical Simulation
Energy & Nanomaterials
  • First Place: Ghodsieh Malekshoar - Solar Photocatalytic Application of Graphene-based Nanocomposites
  • Second Place: Anastasia Colomba - Application of the Jiggled Bed Reactor (JBR) to the Development of Effective Pyrolysis and Activation Processes for the Production of Activated Char from Biomass
Biotechnology & Environment
  • First Place: Ana Maria Aguirre - Study of the Effect of High Pressure Steaming on Lipid Recovery from Microalgae
  • Second Place: Ferdinando Crapulli - Ultraviolet Disinfection of Opaque Fluids with a Taylor-Couette Reactor
Awards for poster presentations were also presented to:
  • First Place: Valerie Orr - Method Development for Efficient Quantification of Oil Production in Microalgae
  • Second Place: Alfredo Martinez-Igelsias - Adsorption of Naphthenic Acids on Commercial Activated Carbon

Nova Chemicals, SNC Lavalin, Trojan Technologies, and WorleyParsons participated in the "Industry Spotlight" segment of the event, presenting organizational overviews and potential career paths to students.
